Paediatric First Aid(PFA)

This course is suitable for people who work with children and young people, including child care workers, crèche workers, children and young people activity providers, nursery staff or parents who would like to be prepared

Duration 12 hours
1: Emergency Paediatric First Aid.
Be able to assess an incident involving an Infant and Child.
  • Describe how to conduct a scene survey.
  • Identify when and how to call for help.
Be able to manage an Infant and a Child who is unresponsive and NOT breathing normally.
  • Demonstrate how to conduct a primary survey of an Infant and Child.
  • Demonstrate how to administer Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) using an infant manikin and child manikin.
  • Demonstrate the action you would take if an unresponsive Infant and Child started to vomit
  • Demonstrate how to switch on an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and where to place the pads.
  • Identify when and how to call for help.
  • Identify when to stop Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
Be able to provide first aid to an unresponsive and breathing normally Infant and Child.
  • Demonstrate how to turn a Child from face down to face up.
  • Demonstrate how to conduct a Secondary Survey.
  • Demonstrate how to place an Infant and Child into the recovery position.
Be able to manage an Infant and Child who is having a seizure.
  • Identify different causes of seizure.
  • Describe how to assist a Child who is in experiencing an Absence seizure and a Tonic-Clonic seizure.
Recognise and assist an Infant and Child who is choking.
  • Describe how to identify an Infant and Child with a partially blocked and completely blocked airway
  • Administer first aid to an Infant and Child who has a severe airway blockage using appropriate manikins.
  • Describe the procedure to be followed after administering the treatment for a severe airway blockage.
Manage an Infant and Child with external bleeding.
  • Identify the types of external bleeding.
  • Describe how to control severe external bleeding.
Manage an Infant and Child who is in shock (from severe blood loss).
  • Describe the signs and symptoms of shock (from severe blood loss).
  • Describe how to manage an Infant and Child who is suffering from shock (from a severe blood loss).
2: Managing Paediatric Illness and Injury.
Understand the roles and responsibility of a First Aider.
  • Identify the roles and responsibilities of a first aider.
  • Describe how to minimise the risk of infection to self and others.
  • Identify the need for establishing consent to provide first aid.
  • Describe how to complete an accident report form.
  • Identify the First Aid equipment that should be available in a workplace.
  • Describe the safe use of first aid equipment
Be able to administer First Aid to a casualty with Anaphylaxis.
  • Identify common triggers for Anaphylaxis.
  • Recognize suspected anaphylaxis.
  • Describe how to administer first aid to a casualty with an anaphylactic reaction.
Manage an Infant or Child who has had an electric shock.
  • Identify how to safely manage an incident involving electricity
  • Identify first aid treatment for a casualty who has suffered from an electric shock.
Know how to provide First Aid to an Infant and Child with burns or scalds.
  • Describe how to recognise the severity of burns and scalds to an Infant and Child.
  • Describe how to treat burns and scalds to an Infant and Child.
Be able to provide first aid to an Infant and Child with a suspected fracture or dislocation.

Describe how to treat a casualty with:

  • Fractures

Be able to provide First Aid to an Infant and Child with a Head, Neck or Back injury.

Describe how to recognise and manage Head injuries including:

  • Concussion
  • Skull fracture
  • Cerebral compression
  • Spinal injury

Describe how to administer first aid for suspected::

Be able to administer first aid to an Infant and Child with sudden poisoning.
  • Identify the routes that poisons can take to enter the body.
  • Describe how to administer immediate First Aid to a casualty affected by sudden poisoning.
  • Identify sources of information for treating those affected by sudden poisoning.
Know how to provide First Aid to an Infant and Child with a foreign body in eyes, ears and nose.
  • Describe how to recognise an Infant and Child with foreign bodies in their eyes, ears and nose.
  • Describe how to manage an Infant and Child with foreign bodies in eyes, ears and nose.
Know how to provide First Aid to an Infant and Child with an eye injury.
  • Describe how to recognise an Infant and Child with an eye injury.
  • Describe how to manage an Infant and Child with an eye injury.
Know how to provide First Aid to an Infant and Child who has been bitten or stung.
