FIRST AID for SCHOOL Students and Staff

All First Aid training providers deliver training following guidelines set out by the Health and Safety Executive, we are no different; the thing that’s a bit different about us is our motivation and what we have set out to achieve.

We have formed as a company because everyone in our team has experienced one too many losses in our lives. In many cases, these losses may have been prevented if the people around had the skills and confidence to help. We believe that first aid should be a life skill that everyone is taught, so that we are all more able to look after each other in and around our communities. In order to achieve this we believe that the most effective method is to teach all young people in schools.

Teaching young people first aid in schools is not without barriers the biggest of these barriers is paying for the training. Our plan to overcome this is as follows: –

Form a Community Interest Company capable of providing high quality, high capacity accredited First Aid training.

Provide high quality First Aid training to Businesses and organisations at very competitive rates

Use profits to subsidise First Aid Training for young people in schools

Give as many young people as possible the skills and confidence required to help save lives

If you believe as we do that everyone should learn the skills required to help save lives, please consider using us to provide your first aid training and help make sure that we all have the skills to help each other.

First Aid School Training CIC is a non-profit organisation which operates on the basis that all profit from commercial training delivered will is diverted, directly subsidising training for young people in schools.

Who is responsible for first aid in schools?

Under the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 (HSWA), the employer is responsible for ensuring a health and safety policy is put in place at schools, including the arrangements both on and off site, the number of first aiders and the location of first aid boxes.

What is the minimum provision of first aid for schools?
  • A suitably stocked first aid box.
  • An appointed person to take charge of first-aid arrangements.
  • Information on arrangements for employees.

Alongside the minimum provisions for schools, a risk assessment must be completed. This should determine any additional provision.

How many school staff should be first aid trained?

A full risk assessment will determine the number required. The school should ensure that the training is delivered in line with the needs of the school environment and fully allows for staff absence and full coverage of the school site.

Does the training provider need to be approved by the local authority?

No, it is down to the “employer” to make the necessary checks on the training provider they choose to work with.

Training providers need to prove that they are competent to deliver the training. Demonstration of competence includes current registration as a nurse, paramedic or doctor, and knowledge from a training qualification (such as FAW or EFAW).

Full guidance is available on the HSE website http://www.hse.gov.uk/pubns/geis3.pdf

How long are certificates valid for?

First aid certificates are valid for three years. It is therefore the employer’s responsibility to ensure that all relevant personnel are up to date with their training via refresher courses.
